The first attempts to establish a museum in Liepāja were made in the 1880s. It is evidenced by one of the letters written by a writer and traveler Minna Freimane (1847–?), who was active in the first Latvian society established in Liepāja ‒ the Liepāja Latvian Charity Society founded in 1882: “At my request, a museum was also founded in our Liepāja Society. 25 (objects) and old Russian money were donated.” Unfortunately, further information about this museum is unavailable.
