The next Latvian Song and Dance Celebration is planned for 2028. For those who cherish the dream of wearing their national costume, it is time to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
In the masterclasses organized by Kurzeme National Costume Information Centre, under the guidance of knowledgeable craftspeople, there will be an opportunity to learn step by step the necessary skills to make your own parts of the Kurzeme folk costume: shirts, skirts, jackets, bodices, and waistcoats. Following the advice of clothing historians – a naked person first puts on a shirt – the classes will start with making a shirt, which is the basis of traditional national costume.
The introduction class, led by Inta Ambrēna, will allow participants to try out embroidery patterns of varying complexity and ask questions about the national costume. If participants choose to make a working garment, tips will be given on making a non-adorned shirt.
Master Inta Ambrēna has been a long-time member of the studio “Liepava” and has improved her knowledge at the handicraft school “Latvietes pūrs” and privately with embroidery masters. Her shirts, hats, and ties are worn in Latvia and abroad.
During the class, students will have the opportunity to see an exhibition of shirts from the Liepāja Museum's collection, which will give them an insight into the variety of patterns.
Participation in the introduction class is free of charge; each subsequent class will cost EUR 25. Application and further information at the Liepāja Museum Kurzeme National Costumes Information Centre head Vineta Solovjova by phone 29449771
