Skates from Rucava – "krīčoles"

Since 2 July 1970, the Liepāja Museum has been preserving in its collection a gift from Ķērsta Zeme, the owner of the house " Vīzaiņi" in the village of Brušviti in Rucava parish – skates tied to shoes with ropes or leather straps, which the donor herself called " krīčoles."

There is no record of whether the giver wore the skates herself or whether they were used by someone else.

Although the skates look relatively simple compared to modern examples, with the blades fitted into a special boot, they are in fact an absolute masterpiece. The metal blade had to be fitted into the wooden base to hold securely and not suddenly fall out when skating. The blade itself had to be sharp and stable enough. The homemade "krīčoles" were used by fishermen and anglers to get to distant fishing spots. These skates were also worn by those who utilized the frozen waters for winter fun.
