LIEPĀJA IN THE 19th CENTURY

About 300 original objects, artworks, photographs, and documents tell the story of this time and the transformation of Liepāja. The exhibition also features one of the most outstanding monuments of Classical sculpture in Latvia – a bronze bas-relief of a tomb made by Torvaldsen's student E. N. K. von der Launitz (1797–1869) – the sculptor's tribute to his brother Adjutant G. von der Launitz, who died in the Battle of the Nations in 1813. The favorable coastal climate and the high salinity of the seawater since the 19th century. Liepāja has gradually developed into a renowned spa resort. Representatives of the Russian imperial family visited the town more than once. In 1862, Tsar Alexander II and his Tsarina visited the city. The exhibition presents the Tsar's gift to Liepāja – two filigree cast images of knights – east and west. The exhibition also features paintings of Liepāja views from the first half of the 19th century, a complete collection of 19th-century silver coins in circulation, and the official cap once worn by the city's head himself. The most interesting exhibits include the bicycle of the Union Cyclists' Association, the front wheel of which has a diameter of 125 cm.
