Liepāja Interior Museum Invites You to Celebrate Easter with Chocolate Bunnies and Marzipan Eggs
09.04.2025
On April 15, 16, and 17 at 16:00, the Liepāja 17th-19th Century Interior Museum, “Madame Hoyer’s Guest House,” located at 24 Kungu Street, will host a creative activity where participants can cast chocolate Easter bunnies and hand-make colorful marzipan eggs.

The chocolate bunnies will be crafted using an authentic 19th-century metal mold, which was brought to Liepāja from the Netherlands after being purchased at a collectors’ fair as part of the museum’s establishment.

The tradition of the chocolate bunny originates from German customs. In the 19th century, as chocolate-making and melting techniques advanced, chocolate figurines of the Easter bunny began to be created in special metal molds. This tradition stems from the belief that the Easter bunny, like eggs, symbolizes fertility, rebirth, and new life.

Marzipan, primarily made from almond flour and sugar, has a rich history, much like chocolate. Spanish King Philip III first documented the sweet treat in the 17th century in a recipe book. However, the exact origins of marzipan remain unclear, with various theories suggesting that it may have originated from Arab culture, which is renowned for its use of nuts in confections.

Participants in the Hoyer’s House sweets workshop will also have the unique opportunity to meet a real Easter bunny within the museum’s interior.

Attendees will have the chance to unleash their creativity and, accompanied by Hoyer’s House storytellers, embark on a guided tour of the second-floor exhibition of the Liepāja 17th-19th Century Interior Museum. During the tour, guests will learn more about the Stender family, who owned the house in the 19th century.

While children create their own chocolate bunnies and marzipan treats, accompanying adults are invited to enjoy refreshments from “Stender’s Patisserie,” which will be open during the workshops on Wednesday and Thursday.

Please note that spaces in the chocolate bunny workshop are limited, and advance booking is required. To reserve your spot, please call +371 29605223 or email inga.ziverte@liepaja.lv. The fee is 10 EUR per person.

Additionally, please be aware that photography and video will be taken during the event. The footage will be used for promotional purposes on the Liepāja Interior Museum and Liepāja Museum websites and social media accounts. By attending the event, you acknowledge your consent to being included in audio or visual material.
